Air conditioning can provide relief from the summer heat but it can also give way to high electric bills. The last thing you want is to pay more on your electricity than you have to. If you have central air conditioning, there are things you can do to keep it running as efficiently as possible. Doing these things will save you some hard earned cash!

The air filter should be changed approximately every three months. This is an important aspect of having AC and is as important as changing the oil on your automobile when it is needed. Put in a new filter at the beginning of the summertime, and every three months after that, replace it. An arrow on the side of the filter will let you know what direction you should place the filter in the unit. The arrow will indicate the manner in which the air flows through the filter to reach the system.

If you happen to live in an area that has a lot of wind or if you have allergies, you may need to replace the filter more often than every three months. If there is construction going on in your neighborhood, this is another reason why replacing it more frequently might be necessary.

It helps to buy the highest quality filters for your air conditioning unit that you can afford. Pleated synthetic ones cost more than fiberglass filters but they provide better value and quality for your money. Look for ones with a Filter Performance Rating (FPR) of five.

You want to be able to determine if the unit is cooling as efficiently as it is supposed to be. The harder it has to work to cool, the more you will pay. You can measure this by comparing the temperature of the air blowing out of the vent to the temperature of the air that is travelling back into the return vent. The difference between the two temperatures should be 15 to 18 degrees Fahrenheit (F).

If the difference in temperature is higher, this might signal that a problem is present, such as a clogged filter. On the other hand, a lower difference in temperature could mean that the unit is low on Freon. If you discover either too high or too low a temperature difference, the system requires maintenance.

Set the thermostat in your home to a normal temperature. Do not turn it down too far assuming that your home will cool at a more rapid rate as it will not. All it will do is to force your air conditioning to work even harder, thus raising your cost of power.

You need to protect the ducts on your AC from any dirt getting into them and clogging them. If you are doing home repairs or improvements and there is dust and debris flying every which way, tape temporary filters over the return vents located on the wall. This will keep your ductwork clean and unclogged. For this task, purchasing the cheap fiberglass filters is fine.
