5 REASONS YOUR AIR CONDITIONER IS FREEZING

Don’t be surprise if your AC freezes up even in the midst of the summer heat. Yes it does happen, and as a matter of fact, we treat such cases all the time. A frozen AC is as good as useless, because you cannot make use of it till it unfreezes. Freezing can also damage your unit, if the situation is not remedied on time. Running a frozen AC can cause serious damage to the compressor.

Several factors are however responsible for AC freezing, and we are going to discuss some of them below.

Freezing Caused By Low Refrigerant (Freon)

When the Freon level of your AC unit is low, it causes the AC coil to freeze up. So make sure you recharge the Freon once you notice that the level of the Freon is low, because low refrigerant makes the AC coil to be extremely cold, and thus freeze up in no time.

Clogged AC Drain

If the drain system of your unit is clogged, it can result in AC freezing. During the refrigeration process, condensed water is given off which is drained out via the drain pipe of the AC. So if the drain line is being obstructed by anything, the cold water will not be able to flow out of the AC. This can also make your AC to freeze up.

So to prevent your AC from freezing up as a result of a clogged drain line, make sure you sanitize the drain system of your unit from time to time. Also, ensure that you clean the coil as well so that the ice that formed on the coil as a result of the clogged drain won’t become another obstacle to the free flow of water from the AC via the drain hole.

AC Fan

If the motor of your AC Fan is not working, it can also make your AC to freeze up. The fan helps to circulate warm air round the unit; now it is this warm air that helps to prevent the AC coil from freezing up. So make sure you oil and service the fan motor from time to time.

Air Filter

A dirty or clogged air filter can hinder the free flow of air from the AC. In a situation where by the cool air from your AC cannot flow through the clogged air filter; this cool air will flow back into the unit and will in return freeze up the AC coil.

So make sure you sanitize the air filter and air registers of your AC regularly.

AC Environment

If your air conditioner’s environment is too jam packed or stuffed with a lot of items, it will be difficult for fresh air to flow to your unit. Now when there is absence of warm air from the surrounding, your AC coil is likely to freeze up. So make sure the area around your AC is free, so that warm and fresh air can reach the AC coil.
